Assignment 6

One good poster design and one bad poster design.

Mike and I analyzed the following posters:

Good Design

Contrast in value
There is a strong contrast in value for the text and the graphics. The text is always a black where the background is white; the text is always white where the background is black. This creates a good figure and ground contrast.
Closure
Closure is used for the biggest face. Even though the details are not there, we can still imagine the details of the face on the black side. On the white side, we can imagine the lines of the face even though it is not there.
Continuity
The lines of the face merges with the lady’ s shape. The line seems run along the entire poster from one corner to another in a diagonal, forming a pleasing ‘S-curve’.
Unity
There is continuity as the theme of black and white is used throughout the poster.

Bad Design

Figure and Ground
The figure and ground are not separated clearly. It is not obvious telling the fore from ground. There is no contrast in value.
It is confusing whether Lindsay Lohan or Herbie the car is the subject.
Color
There is a lack of contrast in the colours used. The various colours hence all fight for attention which may cause viewers to be confused.
One possible reason why the poster is so colourful is because the target audience might be children. Children usually like colourful items and hence the use of this scheme might attract their attention.
