Assignment 4: Poster (Final Design)

After thinking about my poster more, I came up with this design:

The reason why I made the foreign worker stand out is because I feel this depicts the situation. They are discriminated in every situation even when they engage in normal activities like playing basketball (as shown in the poster).
The organisation I have chosen is Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (HOME). They are an non-governmental organization that aims to 'promote a culture of welcome'. They help foreign workers in Singapore whenever they can.
The Serangoon Garden issue has brought up the issue of foreign workers into the highlight. Many feel this situation is actually an 'lightning rod' for the underlying issue. There have been much hype of the issue.
This poster is directed at the situation and I hope this situation can be resolved soon.

Assignment 4: Poster design 2

Here is my draft 2 of my poster design:

The reason for the colours of the smileys is that they represent the different skin colours of different races. The pictures on the top right and top left are both black and white due to reasons explained with regards to my first poster draft.
This time round, the pictures are there for comparison, for viewers to understand that we are the same, regardless of race.
Final Poster design:

This is my final poster design. The reason why the foreigner in the pic appears different is because I feel this shows the current situation now: where a foreigner is deemed as different and ostracised. Even in the same place doing the same thing, a foreigner is views differently.

Assignment 6

One good poster design and one bad poster design.

Mike and I analyzed the following posters:

Good Design

Contrast in value
There is a strong contrast in value for the text and the graphics. The text is always a black where the background is white; the text is always white where the background is black. This creates a good figure and ground contrast.
Closure
Closure is used for the biggest face. Even though the details are not there, we can still imagine the details of the face on the black side. On the white side, we can imagine the lines of the face even though it is not there.
Continuity
The lines of the face merges with the lady’ s shape. The line seems run along the entire poster from one corner to another in a diagonal, forming a pleasing ‘S-curve’.
Unity
There is continuity as the theme of black and white is used throughout the poster.

Bad Design

Figure and Ground
The figure and ground are not separated clearly. It is not obvious telling the fore from ground. There is no contrast in value.
It is confusing whether Lindsay Lohan or Herbie the car is the subject.
Color
There is a lack of contrast in the colours used. The various colours hence all fight for attention which may cause viewers to be confused.
One possible reason why the poster is so colourful is because the target audience might be children. Children usually like colourful items and hence the use of this scheme might attract their attention.

Assignment 5: Revisited..

Here are my xmas card designs in 3 different colours.. i personally like the black one best...

I drew Rudolf using the polygonal lasso in photoshop. Any ways to improve my card? haha..

The snowman was a bit plain hence i added in a scarf and a little head-dress for him/her. The cap was painted red on purpose to match that of Rudolf's nose and the 'RED' word..

Assignment 2: Relook..

For Assignment 2, as advised by Mr Alfred, I used Flash to help me sketch the vending machine which makes things much easier.

Level of abstractions:

And the pictogram itself:

I chose this as I feel this image is the simplest form that still allows viewers to understand what is it. A more abstract image would be make things ambiguous.

This new image is now 3D compared to my previous work.

Assignment 1: Relook...

As we near the portfolio submission, I decided to edit all my assignments to make them look better.
Starting with Assignment 1:

Hate for Smoking

I changed the fonts to make them more 'smokey' and i also redo the 'smoke' effect from the cigarette.
The skull is still there to represent the doom I link smoking with.

After gathering feedback for this one, I decided to change to 'musical instruments' instead of 'music' since I am not able to establish my love for 'music' in my drawings.

Assignment 5: Xmas Card Design

The original plan was to have the shape of the Xmas tree cut out from the cover to show the inside of the card. Like this:

The inside of the card would look something like this:

However, I was not satisfied with this. Hence I worked on it more....
